I watched the opening ceremonies for the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing today. The artistry and pageantry was absolutely breathtaking. It made me proud to be ethnically Chinese. The performance featured various unique aspects of China's rich culture, including martial arts, music, dance, and fashion. It was clear from the display of talent that China's most valuable resource is its people.
What boggles my mind is why day to day China has to resort to bootlegging other cultures for a quick buck when they are perfectly capable of creating and augmenting their own. There is no pride in that.

One of my goals in life is to visit every continent by age 30. Unfortunately, I'm falling behind. Here is my progress so far:
Age 0 - North America
Age 16 - Europe
Age 25 - Asia
With less than 2 years left before my deadline, I have 4 more continents to go:
Africa
Antarctica
Australia
South America
Here is the schedule I have in mind:
Dec 2008 - South America and Antarctica
Sept 2009 - Africa
February 2010 - Australia

In the next 12 months, at least 3 of my friends are going abroad to participate in philanthropy projects. First is my buddy Mina who is currently in Nine Mile, Jamaica, the birthplace of Bob Marley. In association with Schools Without Borders, he's helping the staff and students at Stepney All Ages School catch up with the 21st century digital world. Being an avid film maker, Mina is also documenting his experience in a film and blogging whenever Internet connectivity exists.
The Project Nine Mile blog provides an interesting perspective on their progress and Mina's flickr stream is full of expressive photographs.
If their pictures and words move you, show them your support!
